#19 in Manhattan #47 in NYC Store of Note

Store: So much going on here. A long, narrow space made narrower by shelving that creates a hallway entrance. A seating area behind the shelving is decorated with a full blown NY-themed mural. In the deli cases is a collision of Jewish and Italian comfort foods, each more appealing then the last. CBS FM is playing Fleetwood Mac's Gypsy, CNBC silently covers the markets on a small flat screen. A poster behind the register proclaims "I (Heart) NY More Than Ever." The cream cheese presentation looks good enough to eat with a spoon, particularly the one that looks like blueberry compote. Pastry selection covers all the classics, including Italian cookie options. There's a deliberate pace to the staff, moving at a fair rate while openly acknowledging those of us waiting on line. Points only come off for the small drink offerings, but I wouldn't expect variety of that type from a place like this. 4.75

Bagel: Large bagel, served fresh but not hot. Standard toppings at a strong density. One-sided. Chewy but not tough. Soft. Salt was likely used in the making of this bagel, but it makes no play in the flavor. As such, if you like everything topping but prefer a low sodium taste experience, this is the bagel for you. 3.75

Cream Cheese: Served deli case cool. Even application and good amount. Cheesy but evenly so, therefore not triggering the dreaded sensation of 'overcheese'. Thick but not clumpy. Scallion makes no major assertions. A solid showing but not the types of things I'm looking for in a standout spread. 3.75
