Store: (Note: Store reviewed by second pass request) Serves as the distribution center for many of the Black Seed Bagel locations. A unique, pleasing variation on the typical NYC bagel smell hits on entry, possibly due to the wood-fired oven component. A large space, contemporary without the black and white tile aesthetic that marks so many newer spots in the city. Joni Mitchell's Blue album plays on the radio overhead. Very limited refrigerated drink selection, but what's there is both well curated and uncommon to most shops. Spreads are not displayed in any decorative manner but the variety is compelling, including seasonal offerings. Polite, friendly staff. Worth the trip to catch the sights and smells of a Montreal-style shop. 4

Bagel: A small bagel as befits the hybrid Montreal style with a large central hole. Defined round shape. Served in attractive packaging, fresh and slightly warm. Double-sided toppings at standard composition. Salt not apparent visually or in flavoring. A slightly sweeter, denser dough. Doesn't quite fit into any of the texture metrics built out for this exercise: no crunch to the shell, overt doughiness or jaw clenching chew. In this respect it gains points for distinction, with freshness taking it the rest of the way. 3.5

Cream Cheese: Served at neutral temperature. A bit of a roller coaster experience. On the plus side, a very distinctive flavor that hits in an aromatic manner, similar to rosewater not in flavor but in impact. Forms a nice interplay with the bagel that blurs the line between where one taste experience ends and the other begins. On the down side: the quantity. As is the case with nearly every other Black Seed location I've visited, the spread is applied like mortar. The large central hole and small size of the bagel inevitably spreads to the shell on packaging and squishes about on consumption, making each bite a napkin grabbing experience. Worth it for those looking to understand a different way a spread could hit the palate, but be prepared to get messy. 3.5
